Restorative Implantology – Module #3 (2022)

This is a 3-day course on Restorative Implantology dealing with Full Arch Restorations, which contains both didactic and practical components, designed for the general dentist to add to their daily clinical repertoire. The content is strongly evidence-based, aiding the clinical operator to have confidence that their procedures have been validated by research.

This course provides a total of 24 hours of scientific CPD.

Module 3 covers full arch fixed AND removable implant supported prostheses. This includes:

  • Significance of centric relation
  • Diagnosis and treatment planning through “prosthetically driven” implant placement and positioning;
  • Concepts for improving stability/retention of full arch prostheses;
  • Determining vertical dimension, occlusal plane, and smile arc for function and aesthetics;
  • Dental arch positioning based on function (neutral zone) and aesthetics (smile design);
  • Difference between and significance of implant protected, bilateral balanced and lingualised occlusion for full arch prostheses;
  • Use of alveolectomy for surgical and prosthetic movement of transition lines for improved aesthetics;
  • Use of alveolectomy to improve lip support for fixed prostheses without the use of flanges;
  • Full arch immediate implant supported fixed provisionalisation and loading, taking into account alveoloplasty;
  • Full arch impression, verification, registration and try-in techniques;
  • Differences between implant retained and implant supported removable prostheses;
  • Concept of hinge movement for tissue support in implant retained prostheses;
  • Differences in movement between Locator/ball vs telescopic abutments resulting in different prosthesis designs;
  • Design principles and attachment positioning on bars for implant supported prosthesis to improve stability;
  • Designing open palate removable maxillary full arch prostheses without creating air leakage when speaking;
  • Relining removable prostheses with Locator/ball attachments vs bar/clips;
  • Fixed implant supported prostheses designs (prosthetic vs. natural gingival tissue);
  • Understanding novel approaches to mandibular full arch restorations (NovumTM, TrefoilTM);
  • Overcoming anatomical limitations (sinus or IAN involvement) using tilted implants and angled abutments;
  • Effect of force generation of implant supported prostheses against each other;
  • Effect of force generation of implant supported prostheses against tissue supported prostheses;
  • Materials available for full arch prostheses, and how they differ from single and multi-unit prostheses;
  • Relining removable prostheses which are supported by two single round attachments;
  • Relining removable prostheses which are supported by a bar;
  • Replacement of fractured clips.

Hands-on exercises:

  1. Obtaining centric relation records
  2. Correcting angulation using angled body screw-retained abutments
  3. Conversion of upper full denture to screw-retained implant supported fixed provisional
  4. Conversion of lower full denture Locator retained removable provisional
  5. Direct modification of fixed provisional post-soft tissue healing
  6. Occlusion adjustment of full arch prostheses
